BEIJING (Reuters) - Chinese President Xi Jinping, a South Korean envoy, has said he wants to restore relations "to normal" between their two countries after straining over the latter's hosting of the US anti-missile system.
The new South Korean president sent his envoy Lee Haixan to China in a move aimed at overcoming differences between the two countries after winning the election, last week.
"We would like to work with South Korea to maintain the results we have achieved with difficulty, to deal with conflicts well and to restore China-South Korea's normal course of relations," Xi said when receiving the Korean envoy in Beijing.
"Your visit to China to intensify contacts on important issues concerning bilateral relations ... shows that President Moon and his administration attach great importance to our relations," he said.
Lee assured Moon that he had asked him to convey his gratitude to the Chinese president for the congratulatory telegram he sent him after the election.
Relations between the two countries have worsened over the past few months, following the deployment of South Korea's anti-missile system Thad, which Beijing sees as a threat to its military capabilities.
Thad aims to deter threats from North Korea believed to have nuclear weapons and long-range ballistic missiles. However, China believes that the system will lead to imbalance in security in the region.
President Moon spoke with President Shi last week and the two leaders agreed that Pyongyang's nuclear disarmament was a "common goal" between the two sides, a spokesman for the South Korean president said.
Tensions in the region rose as Pyongyang launched on Sunday what appeared to be its longer-range missile.
The UN Security Council held a closed-door meeting on Tuesday to discuss tougher sanctions on North Korea.
Xi's conciliatory tone came a day after Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi told the South Korean envoy that Seoul had to "remove the obstacles placed in the way of good relations between our two countries."
