As US drilling activity increases, oil prices are falling

    Mawazine News - Follow up
Oil prices fell on Monday as another increase in the number of US drilling platforms undermined OPEC-led efforts to curb oil supplies.
Trading was weak due to a holiday in China, the United States and Britain, but concerns remain about whether OPEC's cuts are enough to dampen supplies.
Brent crude futures fell 15 cents from their last close to $ 51.98 a barrel by 1115 GMT.
The contract ended last week down about 3 percent.
Futures for West Texas Intermediate crude fell 17 cents to $ 49.63 a barrel.
The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) and some producers from outside agreed last week to extend a commitment to cut production by about 1.8 million barrels a day until the end of the first quarter of 2018.
A tentative agreement has been in place since January and will end in June this year.
Despite the ongoing cuts, oil prices have not risen much more than $ 50 a barrel.
Much of OPEC's success will depend on cutting output on the United States, which is not involved in the cuts, whose production has increased 10 percent since mid-2016 to more than 9.3 million bpd, close to the production levels of Russia and Saudi Arabia, the biggest crude producers.
Baker Hughes Energy Services said exploration companies increased the number of drilling platforms for the 19th straight week to 722, the highest number since April 2015.
Analysts say the way to stop the ongoing supply bottleneck is to cut the world's huge fuel reserves
