US President Donald Trump signed a decision not to move the US Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem at the moment, temporarily avoiding a promise he made during his campaign.
The White House statement said that the decision did not mean Trump's withdrawal from his strong support for Israel and the existing alliance between Washington and Tel Aviv, adding that the postponement seeks to increase the chances of successful negotiations between Israel and the Palestinian side.
"The Trump signed a document that keeps the embassy in Tel Aviv, but at the same time stressed that this is only a delay and not a retreat," a US official was quoted by AFP as saying.
"It's just a question of when, not if," he said, adding that the president "does not think the timing is right now."
Trump had promised to move the embassy to Jerusalem in a break with the policy pursued by the United States, which prompted former US President Barack Obama to warn of the seriousness of this step.
Obama hinted, a day before the end of his mandate, that the transfer of the embassy to Jerusalem could produce results that would "blow" the situation, and expressed concern about the decline prospects for a two-state solution.
Both the Palestinian and Israeli sides want Jerusalem as its capital. Such a change would incite international condemnation and impede the chances of a two-state solution to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.
