Beijing to Washington and Pyongyang: solve your problems away from us

    01-08-2017

China's ambassador to the United Nations, Liu Jie, said Washington and Pyongyang bear the main responsibility for easing tension between them, not China, North Korea's main ally.

"Whatever China's capabilities, its efforts will not yield practical results because it depends on the two main parties," Liu said in New York.

"The United States and North Korea have the primary responsibility to keep things moving and start moving in the right direction, not China," he told a news conference at the end of China's month-long rotating presidency of the Security Council.

The United States ambassador to the United Nations, Nikke Hailey, rejected the United Nations response to Pyongyang's missile tests, saying that "the time to speak with North Korea is over."

Earlier, US President Donald Trump warned that China would no longer be allowed to stand idly by "without doing anything" about North Korea after Pyongyang launched a second intercontinental ballistic missile.

Trump was at odds with China over how to deal with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un's regime and repeatedly urged it to curb its rebel neighbor, but Beijing insists dialogue is the only practical way forward.

Kim is proud of his country's ability to hit any goal in the United States after a missile test on Friday, and military experts say it may put even New York in the range of these missiles.
