    [ltr]Hurricane Erema cut off electricity from 5.8 million homes and businesses in Florida, even as the hurricane weakened and crawled into the state's west coast, officials in Florida and US utilities said.[/ltr]
    [ltr]Hurricane Florida struck Sunday morning when it was classified as a serious Category 4, the second highest level of five levels of hurricane intensity measured on the Saffir-Simpson scale. But the cyclone gradually weakened and became the first category on Monday morning. The hurricane was at about 120 kilometers per hour (0900 GMT), the National Hurricane Center said.[/ltr]
    [ltr]Most of the power cuts were in Florida, but the cyclone also caused power outages to about 90,000 homes and businesses in Georgia at 1000 GMT and the number is expected to increase as the storm moves north.[/ltr]
    [ltr]FPL, a unit of Next Energy Energy in Florida, says full power recovery could take weeks in many areas due to expected system losses.[/ltr]
    [ltr]Fbl said its two nuclear plants were safe and shut down only one reactor at its station Turki Point, about 48 km south of Miami on Saturday, because the cyclone changed its course and left reactors in service. Its Santa Lucia station, about 190 km north of Miami.[/ltr]
