CNN reported that the FBI had eavesdropped on Paul Manavort, the former president of the Donald Trump electoral office, on the basis of a secret court statement
The channel quoted three unnamed sources as saying that the wiretaps had taken place before and after the US presidential election, noting that some intelligence had raised suspicions that Manafort had called on Russia to support the campaign for Republican candidate Trump.
But two of the three said the allegations needed proof.
The channel noted that the eavesdropping was issued by the undisclosed surveillance court for foreign intelligence purposes (FISC).
The process began when Manafort became the focus of the FBI investigation, which began in 2014.
The sources said the investigation included a group of consulting firms in Washington that carried out missions that singled out the former ruling party in Ukraine.
Eavesdropping stopped last year due to insufficient evidence. But after picking up alleged talks between Manavort and Ross's clients, the FBI re-examined Mr. Manavort.
The office received a new mandate, which was extended until the beginning of this year, and included surveillance of the personal conversations between Trump and Manavort.
The sources noted that the second mandate was part of the investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation into the alleged relations between members of Trump's electoral headquarters and Russian clients. C
