The Euro-Mediterranean Observatory for Human Rights criticized the poor condition of foreign workers in Saudi Arabia and the Saudi authorities ignored a series of serious abuses against workers, saying they were living a "slavery" life.
The Geneva-based Observatory said in a statement that the Saudi authorities "are failing to enforce their labor laws to address a number of inhumane abuses against foreign workers who are now under conditions of slave-like conditions."
Saudi Arabia has more than 10.24 million expatriate foreign workers, accounting for manual, accounting, service and domestic work, accounting for one-third of the Kingdom's population and more than half its workforce.
The Euro-Mediterranean Observatory highlighted the increasing burdens imposed by the Saudi authorities on expatriates and workers accompanying them, such as financial taxes on services, housing and accompanying individuals, which worsen their living conditions and forced tens of thousands of them to leave the Kingdom because of their inability to meet these obligations.
The human rights observatory pointed out that the imposition of such cartoons greatly affects Arab refugees who fled to the Kingdom, especially from Yemen and Syria, especially since the decision to impose taxes did not exclude any category, such as those that entered the kingdom due to humanitarian considerations.
The Observatory pointed out that foreign workers suffer from abusive conditions and punish the victims who escape the violations resulting from the work of the sponsor and the harsh conditions of work, leaving them vulnerable to exploitation and abuse.
"The system of labor in Saudi Arabia imposes on foreign workers the life of slaves," said James Stuart, legal adviser at the Euro-Mediterranean Observatory.
"The sponsor in Saudi Arabia looks at the migrant worker, like a slave or a servant, and restricts his movement by keeping the passport in his possession, because the laws are in the first place for the benefit of the employers," he said.
He added that some companies and businesses in the Kingdom resort to choosing the worst types of housing for their workers in proportion to their needs. They are required to stay in dilapidated buildings and overcrowded neighborhoods in order to reduce expenses without taking into account their human lives and their health conditions, One of which is poverty, exclusion and marginalization.
