Saudi Arabia should clarify the status of former Crown Prince Prince Mohammed bin Nayef, Human Rights Watch said on Thursday.

"Saudi Arabia should clarify whether it has restricted the movement of former Crown Prince Prince Mohammed bin Nayef," said Sarah Leah Whitson, Middle East and North Africa director at Human Rights Watch. All cases of arbitrary travel and arrest of Saudi citizens, according to Reuters.

Reports that Mohammed bin Nayef was barred from traveling and placed under house arrest were a bitter paradox, given Ben Naif's role in imposing arbitrary restrictions of this kind on thousands of Saudis in the past.

"Prolonged detention without charge or trial or without being brought before a judge is arbitrary detention and violates Saudi laws and international human rights standards," the organization said. The organization requested details of Prince Mohammed bin Nayef's status in a letter to Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubair.

The Saudi monarch, Salman bin Abdul Aziz al-Saud, issued a royal decree last month exempting Prince Mohammed bin Nayef from the crown prince and choosing Crown Prince, Prince Mohammed bin Salman as crown prince instead.
