[rtl]A senior CIA expert has described North Korean leader Kim Jong-un as a rational politician.[/rtl]
[rtl]Said that America must learn how to deal with the isolationist state that has a nuclear weapon. "[/rtl]
[rtl]"Not to mention the threat and intimidation, Kim Jong-un is rational," said Young Sook-Lee, deputy assistant director of the CIA's Korea Mission Center.[/rtl]
[rtl]"We have a tendency in this country to downplay his reservation," he said at a CIA conference at George Washington University that Kim was "seeking long-term power and death in his bed."[/rtl]
[rtl]US officials, including President Donald Trump, have repeatedly portrayed Kim as a "crazy" and far-fetched person.[/rtl]
[rtl]But Yong-sook-Lee stressed that the North Korean leader's focus was on staying in power, mirrored by the murder of his half-brother Kim Jong-nam in Malaysia in February, which he accused Pyongyang's agents of carrying out.[/rtl]
[rtl]He stressed that "all his political positions to serve internal goals" for the North Korean side.[/rtl]
[rtl]The country has a long history of living in an environment of great powers, which means that it always takes a defensive stance, which is what its leaders focus on.[/rtl]
[rtl]Lee said North Korea was "a political entity living on confrontation."[/rtl]
[rtl]But Kim's fierce defense of his attitude and hostile approach to Washington does not mean he will act irrationally because he now has the capability to launch a nuclear-armed missile against the United States.[/rtl]
[rtl]"Any decision to strike Los Angeles (for example) with a nuclear weapon does not favor the continuation of his rule," Lee said.[/rtl]
