US Ambassador to the United Nations Nicky Hailey has called for "two emergency meetings of the Security Council in New York City and the Human Rights Council in Geneva" to discuss developments in Iran and the freedom demanded by the Iranian people.
Hely praised the courage of the Iranian demonstrators, saying that the protests in Iran are automatic, not driven by outside forces.
"The Iranian people are demanding their freedom," Hayley said, without specifying possible dates for the two meetings.
Having read Iranian publications on social networking sites in support of the protests, Healy denied claims by Iranian leaders that the protests were the fabric of Iran's enemies.
"This is the exact picture of the revolution of peoples that have long been oppressed against tyrants," she said.
For his part, State Department official Steve Goldstein denounced Iran's attempts to limit the Internet and called on Iranians to find a way to access the network.
"People in Iran must be able to access these services via private virtual networks," Goldstein said, adding that the Facebook page in Farsi of the US State Department has about 700,000 followers.
"Whenever these sites were available, the situation was better," he said. Demonstrations continued on the street against the Iranian regime, which President Donald Trump considered "brutal and corrupt."
Since the start of the recent protests, Iran has imposed restrictions on social networking, particularly the Telegram and Ingushetm services, which authorities fear to use to spread news of unrest.
There are no alternative US Internet services available in Iran because its companies fear the violation of economic sanctions imposed on the Iranian regime.
Goldstein said that Washington believes that news and non-governmental sources should be available to all Iranians, calling on them to listen to international radio stations.
"We want to encourage the demonstrators to fight for the right and for the openness of Iran."
