    The Lebanese presidency Thursday issued a clarification on the embarrassing situation of US Secretary of State Rex Tilerson, who was forced to sit alone before talks with President Michel Aoun in Baabda, Beirut.[/ltr]
    [ltr]Rafiq Shalala, Director of the Information Office of Aoun said in a statement issued by Mawazine News that "Lebanon did not depart from the custom of the decrees and Talerson arrived early, a few minutes before the expected," stressing that "the meeting began on schedule."[/ltr]
    [ltr]He added that "the protocol director had received the US minister directly upon his arrival at the Baabda Presidential Palace."[/ltr]
    [ltr]Television footage sparked a major media outcry in Lebanon, where Tilerson, sitting alone for a few minutes, showed up in one of the halls of Baabda Palace before his Lebanese counterpart Gebran Bassil entered and shook hands with him.[/ltr]
    [ltr]Observers described this situation as embarrassing, and some even suggested that it be deliberate. They pointed out that Michel Aoun, the father of the wife of Foreign Minister Bassil, is a political ally of the Lebanese Hezbollah.[/ltr]

    US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson was forced to wait several minutes in the Lebanese presidential palace before his Lebanese counterpart received him before his talks with President Michel Aoun.

    Television footage showed Tilerson sitting in a room next to a vacant seat before his Lebanese counterpart Gibran Bassil entered and shook him in what appeared to be a departure from diplomatic practice.

    Tillerson is visiting Lebanon, one of the main countries receiving US military aid, as part of a regional tour.

    A witness from Reuters said Basil did not receive Tillerson at the entrance to the palace when his motorcade arrived.

    Aoun, the father of Foreign Minister Bassil's wife, a political ally of the Iranian-backed Lebanese group Hezbollah, which the United States classifies as a terrorist organization.

    Tillerson is also scheduled to meet Speaker Nabih Berri and Prime Minister Saad Hariri.
