A court in Turkey sentenced six journalists to life imprisonment for having links with the planners of the failed coup attempt in July 2016.

A court in Istanbul has convicted six journalists for ties to the army's independence two years ago, Turkish media reported.

She said the court had convicted journalists of plotting to "overthrow the regime set forth in the country's constitution or establish another system of government."

Among the six were brothers accused of "sending secret signals during a television program on the eve of the attempted coup," the sources said.

One of the convicted, a journalist and professor of economics, received a verdict in his favor from the Constitutional Court, but the sentence was annulled today.

Turkish military officers led a revolt against the rule of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in 2016 that killed 250 civilian protesters.
