[ltr]The United States gambling giant, Sheldon Adelson, has declared his willingness to shoulder the cost of building the US embassy in Jerusalem.[/ltr]
[ltr]According to the Jerusalem Post, the building is supposed to cost about half a billion dollars.[/ltr]
[ltr]Edelson is known for his support of Israel and the right-wing parties in the Jewish state, a support that was born with his marriage to Israeli Mariam Okshorn.[/ltr]
[ltr]Edelson ranks 14th in the list of wealthiest people in the United States, with Forbes estimated its fortune in 2017 at more than $ 34 billion.[/ltr]
[ltr]Sheldon Edelson is the son of Jewish parents who immigrated from the Republic of Lithuania and Wales. His father worked as a taxi driver while he himself worked as a street vendor.[/ltr]
[ltr]In the 1970s, Edelson founded a number of partners with Comdex, which organized America's largest computer showrooms on an annual basis before breaking into the gambling world.[/ltr]
[ltr]Edelson's interest in politics and support for Israel began immediately after his marriage in 1991 from Okshorn, before becoming a major contributor to the right-wing Likud party led by current Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.[/ltr]
