[ltr]Guatemala will take its embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem in May, two days after the US Embassy took the same step, Guatemalan President Jimmy Morales said Monday at a conference in Washington.[/ltr]
[ltr]"I would like to thank President Donald Trump for his leadership. His courageous decision encouraged us to do what is right," Morales was quoted as saying in a speech at the annual policy conference of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee.[/ltr]
[ltr]On December 26, Guatemala announced the transfer of its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, becoming the first country in the world to follow the example of US President Donald Trump, who recognized Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.[/ltr]
[ltr]The President of Guatemala made the decision after having made a telephone call to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The Palestinian Foreign Ministry considered Guatemala's decision "shameful and illegal", while Netanyahu welcomed it.[/ltr]
[ltr]Former Guatemalan President Ramiro de Leon Carpio (1993-1996) ordered the transfer of his country's embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, but quickly reversed his decision after the Islamic countries closed their markets to his country's goods. A43[/ltr]
