Italian government prevents rescue ships from helping refugees

The Independent newspaper reported that the Italian government prevented rescue ships on Sunday from providing assistance to ships and boats carrying refugees, and not to respond to the distress signals they send.
Italian authorities believe that ships carrying refugees destined for Europe via the Mediterranean send distress signals in Libya's territorial waters and are therefore being rescued by Libya .
Italy has banned rescue ships loaded with refugees from docking in its ports, forcing some of them to sail to the shores of Spain .
Italian Foreign Minister Mateo Salveni said his country would no longer allow refugees to enter its territory by sea.
Italy has threatened to stop paying EU financial contributions if the latter does not consider ways of distributing refugees to European countries.
