Former US President Barack Obama has sharply criticized President Donald Trump and Republicans and urged Democrats to vote in November's congressional elections to restore "integrity, respect and rule of law" to the government.
Obama said in a speech at the University of Illinois that Americans are now living in "dangerous times" and accused the Republicans to undermine international alliances by their rapprochement with Russia and caused a sharp rise in the federal budget deficit.
"In two months we have the opportunity to return some form of sanity to our policies, there is one sergeant on abuse of power, which is you and your votes."
Obama, who has been frustrated by some Democrats because he has been out of the limelight since leaving office in January 2017, said Republicans do not seem to want to play any supervisory role over Trump's policies.
"This is not a conservative chieftain. It is certainly abnormal. It is unusual. It is a vision that the protection of our authority and our supporters are all that matters, even if they harm the country," he said.
