Iranian and Western activists have launched a campaign of solidarity with the truck drivers' strike in Iran, despite the arrest of hundreds of them and the threat of the judiciary to execute the organizers of the general strike, which is paralyzing the movement of transport in the country.
While large sectors of the Iranian economy have begun to deteriorate due to US sanctions and corruption in the Iranian state apparatus, the authorities consider the truck drivers' strike a threat to national security, as it contributes to the worsening economic crisis.
Since May, Iranian truck drivers staged an unprecedented nationwide strike to protest against low wages, rising transport costs, increased fees, government corruption and a halt to government subsidies for truck owners and drivers, the campaign said.
"The government of President Hassan Rowhani has taken a double policy to address this issue, on the one hand, made false promises of an imminent increase in wages and financial aid, and on the other hand, has pushed the security forces to suppress the strike and arrest its organizers," the statement said.
"As soon as it became clear that the government's promises were empty and would not materialize, truck drivers began to renew the strike on a larger scale and are also demanding support for spare parts and tires and warned against unsafe and neglected road conditions."
They also demanded a reduction in fees, stressing that the lack of suitable tires at reasonable prices threatens the safety of truck drivers and others.
The campaign called on all relevant international agencies and trade unions, including the International Transport Workers Union and the International Confederation of Trade Unions, to join Iranian truck drivers and to make their voices heard by the international community.
Last month, the head of the International Transport Association, which represents 1.4 million transportation workers in the United States and Canada, issued a solidarity statement with truck drivers on strike in Iran.
The statement said that the Union supports Iranian truck drivers and protested their repression and failure to meet their demands through an open letter sent on 2 October to Abu al-Fadl Mehrabadi, deputy director of the Department of Protection of Iranian Interests at the Pakistani Embassy in Washington, DC.
