{International: Al Furat News} After serving as US Army Secretary of Defense and defense industry, Marc Esper became the Defense Secretary, replacing Patrick Chanahan, who held the post.
The White House announced that the US president appointed Mark Esper as defense secretary, hours after Donald Trump announced that he had ordered a military strike on Iran and then rescinded it minutes before its execution.
Patrick Chanahan was in office after Secretary James Mattis resigned in December.
"Esper is a graduate of the West Point military academy in New York," the Politeco website said, adding that he was a fighter in the Gulf War.
He has held the post of military secretary since November 2017, after spending seven years as an official in the Raytheon defense industry group.
Esper, 55, also served as a national security adviser to Congress and a specialist on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.
Politburo revealed Esper was a close ally of President Trump and a supporter of his decisions, including the deployment of US troops along the border with Mexico.
The source said that the new defense minister may face questions in Congress on his close relationship with industry, pointing out that the most prominent files that will focus on in the coming period is related to Turkey's insistence on the purchase of the Russian S-400 missile system.
"I am confident that Esper will be able to implement the national defense strategy, regardless of any outside influence and political considerations," said Adam Smith, chairman of the House Armed Services Committee.
"I have known Esper for years a congressman and a specialist in private industries, I think our national defense will benefit from his leadership," he said in a statement.
Esper is expected to begin his scheduled visit to Brussels to attend NATO's defense ministers' meeting on June 26-27.
