US Defense Secretary avoids mentioning "Russia" in meeting with defense ministers of Balkan states

    2018/07/13 23:21

(Encyclopedia of this Day News | Iraq News ) - not one mention of the word "Russia" throughout the meeting , which included US Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis , the defense ministers of the Balkan countries in Croatia.

But Moscow was clearly present in the minds of all on Friday as Balkan defense ministers accuse Russia of trying to destabilize and sow differences in this region of the European continent.

"We are not naïve and we are fully aware that some elsewhere would like to see us fail in our attempts here today ... Those who seek to divide us for their own reasons will not enjoy our sincerity to work together," Matisse said in remarks at the meeting before reporters were released from the room.

Among those attending the meeting were Macedonia's defense minister, whose country received an official invitation this week from NATO to start accession talks.

This came despite the opposition of Russia, which fears its continued decline in influence in the region.

The call for the annexation of Macedonia will leave only Serbia and the Bosnian-administered part of Bosnia as areas of Russian influence in the Balkans.

Serbia's defense minister did not attend the meeting in the Croatian capital of Zagreb as defense ministers of eight other countries gathered from the region.

The meeting came at a sensitive time in US-Russian relations, which takes place days before a summit between US President Donald Trump and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin in Helsinki on Monday.

Asked by Reuters after talks on Russia's role in the Balkans, Matisse said Russia was "a destabilizing element."

"They chose to intervene to undermine the democratic fabric in countries whose democratic experiences are still born."
