Al-Abadi rejects political "alignments" that emerged after the elections that "threaten public order" in Iraq
Shafaq News/ The head of the "Victory" coalition Haider al-Abadi expressed on Thursday his rejection of what he called political "alignments" that emerged after the legislative elections that took place in Iraq, calling at the same time the Independent High Electoral Commission to "resolve the problems that confused the general situation."
Al-Abadi said in a statement today, "What is more important than electoral profit and loss is peace and national unity, and the integrity and goodness of the political system that represents the people. Therefore, political alignments that threaten the unity of the people and the integrity of public order are rejected," adding, "We are working with everyone to overcome the crisis." We believe that the state accommodates all, and that building or destroying the state is a shared responsibility.
He pointed out that his position "on the elections was and still is clear and public, and it is not subject to self-interest, regional benefits, or frontal calculations. Since the start of the October 2019 demonstrations, we have called for early and fair elections to achieve justice and restore the people's confidence in their political system. According to the preliminary results, the "Sadr bloc" came first with 73 seats, followed by the "Progress" coalition headed by Muhammad al-Halbousi, Speaker of the dissolved Parliament, in second place among the electoral lists with 43 seats, and then the State of Law coalition led by former Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki with 37. seat, followed by the Kurdistan Democratic Party with 32 seats.
Shiite factions and forces within the "Al-Fatah" coalition rejected the election results. It says that its pursuit would endanger civil peace in the country, which raises fears of a Shiite-Shiite conflict.
