On Thursday, the Federal Supreme Court stipulated that a two-thirds majority of the members of the House of Representatives be achieved to elect the next President of the Republic.
The court issued, in response to Barham Salih’s request, an interpretation of Article (70/First) of the constitution to indicate the majority that must be available to initiate a vote to elect the President of the Republic.
The interpretation states, “The House of Representatives elects a President of the Republic from among the candidates for the Presidency of the Republic by a two-thirds majority of the total members of the House of Representatives, and the quorum is achieved by the presence of two-thirds of the total number of members of the House of Representatives.”
