Shafaq News/ The American diplomat, Alina Romanowski, nominated for the position of the US ambassador in Baghdad, stated that one of the priorities of her work, if she takes the position, is to strengthen independence and citizenship in Iraq, expressing concern about the possibility of the re-emergence of ISIS in this country.
Romanowski said, "Iraq will remain a priority in the foreign policy of the United States, and a cornerstone of regional stability."
The diplomat's statements came, according to what the US "Al-Monitor" website reported, during her appearance before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, as part of the steps to approve her assumption of the position nominated by the administration of President Joe Biden to take over.
Romanowski is currently the US ambassador to Kuwait, and has spent 40 years at the US State Department, the Department of Defense and the US Agency for International Development.
In her testimony before the Committee on Foreign Relations, Romanowski said that if she takes up her position in Baghdad, one of the important elements of her duties will be to work with the new government in Iraq.
The report quoted Romanowsky as saying that the United States "continues to work with our Iraqi partners as they seek to strengthen their democratic institutions, effective governance and the rule of law," adding that if her appointment is approved in Baghdad, "it will be a top priority in dealing with the new Iraqi government, Promoting Iraq's independence and citizen's rights.
She also said that Washington remains concerned about the re-emergence of ISIS in Iraq and intends to continue working with the Iraqi Security Forces on this issue.
The nominated US ambassador explained that she was "convinced, in light of the transition of the United States to the task of providing advice, assistance and empowerment, to continue working with the Iraqi security forces in their fight against ISIS," adding that this leads her to believe that "during the formation of the government, the Iraqi security forces will remain vigilant." against ISIS.
During the same session of the Foreign Relations Committee, he also represented Biden's candidate for the position of US ambassador to Yemen Stephen Fagin, who responded to criticism from committee members about the White House's decision to remove the name of the Houthis from the list of terrorist organizations.
Fagin was recently serving as deputy chief of the US mission in Baghdad. He told the Foreign Relations Committee that the conflict in Yemen is not inevitable and that peace is possible.
In the same session, Democratic Senator Chris Murphy spoke about the flaws in classifying the Houthis as a foreign terrorist organization, saying, "We have to deal in the real world, and the actual effect of classifying the Houthis as a (foreign terrorist organization) is starvation (...) and we have to think seriously." According to Al-Monitor, the next step in the nomination process is for the committee to vote on whether to approve the nominations to refer them to the Senate for a vote in its entirety.
