, Foreign Minister Fouad Hussein met with the European Commissioner for Internal Affairs and Migration Ylva Johansson.
During the meeting, which was held on the sidelines of his participation in the Sixth Brussels Conference on Supporting the Future of Syria and the Region, they discussed bilateral relations between the Republic of Iraq and the European Union and ways to enhance them in all areas of common interest.
During the meeting, the minister reviewed the latest developments and measures taken by the Iraqi government in the field of returning Iraqis wishing to voluntarily return to their homeland, stressing the importance of continuing the existing migration dialogue with the European side, and supporting programs to encourage the voluntary return of Iraqis whose requests were rejected in European countries by preparing Special programs for the rehabilitation of returnees and their reintegration into their communities of origin.
The Minister also presented a summary of the steps taken by the Iraqi government to curb smuggling networks and the role of national authorities to raise societal awareness as far as the issue of migration is concerned.
For her part, Johansson stressed the depth and strength of relations between the two sides, praising Iraq's role in eliminating the terrorist organization ISIS.
She indicated the importance that the European Union attaches to the issue of cooperation and partnership with Iraq, and its desire for stability and its keenness to deepen the bonds of relations between the two sides, praising Iraq's efforts in cooperating with the European Union to curb illegal immigration and limit its dire consequences and the Iraqi government's response to combating smuggling networks and providing all necessary For the voluntary return of immigrants, and it was considered a model for cooperation in the field of immigration.
