Iraq.. sharp fluctuation in fish prices after a government decision
Shafaq News/ The Fish Producers Association clarified, on Tuesday, the reasons for the recent rise and fall in fish prices, calling on the Ministry of Water Resources to wait with the decision to fill in unauthorized farms at drains and wells to maintain the price of fish.
The head of the association, Iyad Al-Talbi, told Shafaq News Agency, "The fish prices have witnessed a sharp rise and fall during the past ten days or two weeks, and the rise was a result of the large supply that came due to water scarcity, as well as the Ministry of Water Resources filling in unlicensed farms on drains and wells, Especially in the Salman Pak and Tarmiyah areas.
He added, "As a result of this landfill, the breeders were forced to display the fish in any way, which led to a very large display, especially in the capital, Baghdad and the province of Babylon. Even half a kilo, and thus the supply increased and prices decreased, and now they have reached 4,000 dinars.
The head of the Fish Producers Association explained that "this decrease was the result of the supply, but it is a temporary decrease for a week or two, because it will lead in the coming days to a shortage and shortage of supply, and thus fish will rise to more than 9 thousand dinars per kilo."
He pointed out that "99% of the waters of the Tarmiyah sites are on the drains, as well as the farms located on the third river and the farms in the province of Babylon, especially the areas adjacent to it. branches emerging from the Euphrates.
Al-Talbi expressed his hope that "these farms will support the Iraqi market, because now the fish stocks are running out, and the farms are starting to dry up due to the scarcity of water, and breeders have resorted to the water of the sewage as a strategic stock that supports the Iraqi market to maintain the price of fish, and we hope that the Ministry of Water Resources, especially The farms of the Third River, for the water of the Third River and the water of the sewers connected to it, goes to the sea, and there is no benefit from it.”
He pointed out that "these farms are subject to lawsuits and their owners are in prison, because they used sewage water, as a joint committee of police, army, intelligence, national security and water resources was formed regarding this issue, forcing the breeders to offer fish up to a quarter of a kilo in the market, as a result of this decision. that caused harm to the breeders.
And the head of the Fish Producers Association continued, “Therefore, as a result of this decision, prices decreased due to the large supply in the market, but it is for a week or two, and then there will be a lack of supply and therefore prices will rise again, and the price of one ton of feed has reached one and a half million after it was 600 thousand dinars. And this coincided with the global scarcity, so we demand that there be a study on this subject to create a balance in the market.”
Al-Talbi concluded his speech by saying, "We appeal to the Prime Minister and the Minister of Water Resources to at least relieve pressure on the drains, which have no effect on water scarcity, but on the contrary, when the breeder returns to the cesspools, he will relieve the good water, especially the Tigris and Euphrates, and we hope the Minister of Resources The fishermen should wait with this decision until there is a balance in the market that does not harm the citizen and the breeder at the same time, and that the price of fish remains no more or less than 5,000 dinars.
