The President of the Republic, Barham Salih, called for regulating water relations with neighboring countries through dialogue, stressing that water security is an integral part of Iraqi national security.

A statement issued by the Presidency of the Republic, on Monday (September 12, 2022), stated that Iraqi President Barham Salih stressed that "the water file is a top priority in the country and an integral part of national security."

Saleh met at Al-Salam Palace in Baghdad, Minister of Water Resources, Mahdi Rashid Al-Hamdani, and they discussed water security and the challenges facing the country.

"The water file is a top priority in the country and an integral part of national security," Saleh said, referring to "the severe climatic changes that are afflicting the country, the region and the world."

He pointed out that "the need to continue the strategic plans developed in this regard and to initiate the initiative to revive Mesopotamia, and that addressing climate change should be a national priority."

The Iraqi president saw the importance of “regulating water relations through dialogue with neighboring countries in accordance with the principles of good neighborliness and taking into account the interests of all without harming Iraq,” praising “the efforts of the government and the Ministry of Water Resources to address water scarcity.”

Barham Salih told the minister that “securing water, protecting the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, and confronting the water risks facing the country, is a collective responsibility in which all state institutions and social activities participate, and is not limited to the Ministry of Water Resources.”

In this context, the low water level of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, drought and lack of rainfall forced thousands of farmers in central and southern Iraq not to use their agricultural lands, and at a time when environmental organizations warned of the complete drying of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers by 2040, the Ministry of Water Resources said that this year, one of the driest years since 1933.

According to the Ministry of Water Resources, the percentage of water received from Iran decreased from 7 billion cubic meters to zero, while Turkey releases less than 20% of the water to Iraq.

Besides the drought, the construction of 14 dams by Iran and the reduction of water releases by Turkey have led to the current crisis in Iraq.
