Borrowers are calling on the government to reduce monthly installments

Borrowers called on the government and the central bank to reduce the monthly installments of loans granted to them due to the low value of their salaries and the crisis of the dinar's decline against the dollar.
Borrowers told Al-Sabah that most of the loans obtained from banks were at a time when the value of the dinar was stable against the dollar, as the exchange rate was 120,000 dinars, and it did not reach these levels.
They added that the value of the installments is high compared to the devaluation of their salaries due to the low price of the dinar against the dollar, so the government and banks should take into account this and reduce the monthly installments they owe. They emphasized that they had to take loans from banks to buy a piece of land or a housing unit because of the housing crisis or to meet other necessary needs, and at the time they were accustomed to a stable exchange rate, but now their suffering has increased due to the steady rise in the prices of goods and commodities.
The borrowers called on the government and the Central Bank also to reconsider the benefits and increase the ceiling for loan repayment periods in order to face the difficult economic situation, or to postpone the collection of installments until the exchange rate stabilizes.
Experts in financial and economic affairs confirmed in previous statements that the value of salaries decreased by 10 percent when the dinar was devalued against the dollar in 2021, but now the difference has increased further due to the continuous decline of the dinar against the dollar. For his part, Jaafar Al-Waeli, a specialist in economic affairs, told Al-Sabah: The dollar crisis has negatively affected various aspects of life, and even the employee is no longer able to deal with the additional expenses of the rise in commodities and the decrease in the value of his salary. He added that the concerned government agencies should take this into account, as this applies to different segments, including the poor and medium, and borrowers who were forced by life circumstances to withdraw loans from banks with high interest rates. Al-Waeli pointed out that there are large numbers of borrowers, whether they were granted loans for cars or housing units, and therefore a wide segment of society was affected by this economic crisis.
