“Voice of America” radio said in a report, on Tuesday, that US military advisors and other members of the international coalition are providing advice to the Kurdish forces in order to develop them and prepare them to face the future risks of “terrorism,” noting that “important work” for unite their ranks.
The report, which was published by the radio in English, and translated by Shafaq News Agency, stated that the US-led coalition against the terrorist organization ISIS is helping the Kurdish forces to reform their ranks, adding that the Peshmerga is a major partner of the United States in the fight against ISIS.
The report added that despite the effectiveness of these Peshmerga military units, they operate independently of each other, and the military advisors hope to change this situation.
The report quoted US Army Colonel Patrick Cogin as saying that the intention is to organize the work of between 6 and 8 units and make these units themselves report directly to the Ministry of Peshmerga, adding that these forces from units 70 and 80 fall within the framework of these units in order to unify all forces. The report stated that the two units “Force 70” and “Force 80” are linked to the two main parties in the Kurdistan Region, as the first is linked to the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, and the second is linked to the Kurdistan Democratic Party, adding that there is “an old tension between the two parties that prevented the formation of a unified military force for the region.”
The report quoted the commander of “Force 70,” Mustafa Shoresh, as saying, “All the problems that stand in our way affect the Peshmerga, and step by step, we continue to implement the reforms requested by the (international) coalition, and we will implement them.”
He pointed out that a group of military units had already been placed under the command of the Peshmerga Ministry, and Shoresh said that "as long as there is ISIS and terrorists, there is a need to unify the forces, in what will be in the interest of all."
The US report stated that despite the growing tension between the political parties, the majority of fighters recognize the importance of unifying the local military forces, and they consider the role of military advisors at this stage vital.
The report quoted the leaders of “Force 80,” Babiker Zebari, as saying, “The American coalition has a major role in this reform process, and they constitute a very useful assistance that they provide to us, whether it is financial or by providing weapons, or by advising the Peshmerga forces.”
However, the report pointed out that experts consider that the issue of uniting the Peshmerga forces ultimately depends on the political leaders and making it a reality.
The report also quoted the Kurdish affairs analyst, Hiwa Othman, as saying, "The unification of the Peshmerga forces is not a technical issue so that you bring military advisors to help in this unification, but rather it is a political decision, and this political decision requires that it be taken at the level of the two parties, the Kurdistan Democratic Party and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan."
The American report concluded by saying that ISIS militants still pose a threat, and many here in the region hope that this situation will motivate political parties to put their differences aside and focus on fighting their common enemy.
