Baghdad / Hussein Hatem
Independent deputies and emerging forces are hinting at a parliamentary escalation within the House of Representatives in the event of insistence on passing the election law under the Saint-Lego system.
“What appears before the people is the agreement of the blocs to amend the election law, but the opposite is true,” says Haider al-Salami, a member of the House of Representatives, an independent representative.
Al-Salami added, "Many independent parliamentarians and emerging forces are against amending the election law, despite the parties' great efforts to pass it."
Al-Salami pointed out that "most of the Iraqi people reject the return of the St. Lego regime, as it will strengthen and recycle the ranks of the ruling parties."
And he continued, “Changing the age condition within the election law is an attempt to push away the rebellious youth who came out in the 2019 protests,” stressing “the independents’ rejection of the elections abroad because they are not controlled, in addition to transferring and replacing the boxes.”
Al-Salami continued, saying: “It is the right of any Iraqi to cast his vote in a spot, but only when there is a real will and real control capable of preserving the voter’s voice.”
In turn, another independent MP, Hussein Al-Sabri, says, “Independent MPs and emerging powers are serious about not passing the election law as desired by the ruling parties.”
Al-Sabri added, "The law is unfair, and insisting on passing it will push us to break the quorum and resort to parliamentary escalation, and we may have to resort to the street."
And he pointed out, “The election law, in its new form, will exclude emerging movements from parliamentary work during the upcoming sessions.”
Al-Sabri pointed out that “the Saint-Lego system did not achieve positive and fruitful results during the past four sessions.”
Al-Sabri was surprised by “the insistence of the political blocs to pass the law despite the rejection he faced by the street and the reference,” noting that “this is the battle that the reference called for.”
For his part, independent MP Amer Abdul-Jabbar says, "The St. Lego regime came at the desire of a political pole that dominated the parliament after the withdrawal of the Sadrist bloc."
Abdul-Jabbar added, "Independents will not be contributors to passing the law, especially after the submission of more than 600 martyrs during the October 2019 protests, whose demands were to change the election law."
He explained that "the multiple constituency system is most appropriate to represent all emerging powers and independents," pointing out that there are reservations about the current provincial councils law because it is unfair and perpetuates the dominance of the influential blocs, he said.
He concluded by saying, "The draft amendment to the St. Lego provincial law implies the reproduction of the same influential political blocs and repeats the same political faces that the street objected to their performance repeatedly and continuously."
It is noteworthy that more than 70 candidates succeeded in ascending to the current parliament under the banner of “independents”, and then most of them dissolved after that within the large coalitions.
