On Sunday, we pass the 20th anniversary of the liberation of Iraq from the grave dictatorial Baathist regime, when the multinational forces entered the city of Baghdad on this day in the year 2003, and purified the city and all other cities of Iraq from the clutches of Saddam’s infidel occupying Baath that occupied Iraq for more than Three decades of a military coup.
And the Iraqis do not forget the image of Abu Tahsin, who struck the image of the tyrant buried in slippers, announcing the end of the era of the infidel Baath in slippers, never to return.
The operation to liberate Iraq began on March 20, 2003, by the multinational forces led by the United States of America, and the American and British military forces accounted for 98% of these forces.
Among the reasons that prompted the multinational forces to carry out these operations are:
1- The government of the late dictator Saddam Hussein continued not to implement the United Nations resolutions related to allowing weapons inspection committees to carry out their work in Iraq.
2- The government of the late dictator Saddam Hussein continues to manufacture and possess "weapons of mass destruction" and the lack of cooperation of the Iraqi leadership in implementing 19 United Nations resolutions regarding giving full data on its arsenal of "weapons of mass destruction".
3- The government of the late dictator Saddam Hussein has relations with Al Qaeda and other "terrorist" organizations that pose a threat to the security and stability of the world.
4- Spreading democratic ideas in the Middle East.
On March 20, 2003, military operations began, and the US army leadership relied on the element of surprise. The prevailing expectation was that the ground campaign would precede an air campaign, as happened in the second Gulf War. shock and awe.”
And American tanks penetrated into the Iraqi desert, bypassing the main cities on their way to avoid urban warfare. On March 27, 2003, sandstorms slowed down the rapid progress of American forces, and American forces faced fierce resistance from the former Iraqi army near the Al-Kifl region, located near Najaf and Kufa.
And the British forces besieged the city of Basra for two weeks before they could storm it, and the British forces were able to storm the city after a fierce battle with tanks, and Basra was captured on March 27 after destroying 14 Iraqi tanks. On April 9, Iraqi forces collapsed in the city of Amarah.
Three weeks after the beginning of the campaign, the American forces began moving towards Baghdad. The initial expectation was that the American armored forces would besiege Baghdad and carry out street wars in Baghdad with the support of the American air force.
On April 5, 2003, a group of 29 American armored vehicles and 14 Bradley armored vehicles launched an attack on Baghdad International Airport, and this force was met with strong resistance by the former Iraqi army units that were defending the airport.
On April 7, 2003, another armored force launched an attack on the Republican Palace and was able to establish a foothold in the palace. Hours later, a complete collapse of the Iraqi army's resistance occurred.
On April 9, 2003, US forces announced the extension of their control over most areas, and news agencies transmitted scenes of a small crowd trying to overthrow a statue of the tomb dictator Saddam Hussein in the middle of a square in front of the Sheraton Hotel.
Since the morning of April 9, 2003, Al-Firdaws Square witnessed a gathering of some residents until they became dozens, with the disappearance of any trace of the Iraqi authorities’ appearances in the street or around the two hotels, until American tanks began to reach Al-Firdaws Square from several directions and completely surrounded it at four o’clock in the afternoon.
Al-Firdaws Square entered history on the ninth of April as a witness to the liberation of Baghdad with the fall of the graveyard statue of Saddam Hussein and the announcement of the end of his rule and the rule of his fascist party.
