The head of the Parliamentary Services and Reconstruction Committee, Ali Jassim Al-Hamidawi, confirmed that the actual need to cover the housing sector throughout Iraq exceeds 3 million housing units, stressing that lands that are distributed without providing real infrastructure, citizens are forced to abandon and sell them.
Al-Hamidawi said in a press interview seen by Taqaddam that “during our meeting with the Minister of Construction and Housing, we asked him to present the ministry’s vision for the next stage, and which sectors will be targeted, and the minister told us of a vision that is directed towards two files, the first related to infrastructure and the second towards the housing sector,” noting that “ There is no accurate statistics for the need for the housing sector, but it is expected to reach two or three million housing units throughout Iraq, and perhaps a little more than this number.
And he continued, "If the housing problem in Iraq is addressed, it will lead to the treatment of other problems, and go towards the establishment of housing complexes, the distribution of plots of land and titling them, and the establishment of infrastructure, which means reviving many areas and this contributes to moving the wheel of the economy as well," pointing out that "the Bismaya complex It is considered a typical complex with more than 125,000 housing units, and if we talk about establishing 6 complexes in six districts, this means that we are talking about 800,000 housing units, and this number addresses the housing crisis in Baghdad.”
Al-Hamidawi stated, "In addition to the investment complexes and the distribution of plots of land on the outskirts of Baghdad and the establishment of its infrastructure, as well as the Sadr City project and the construction of 100,000 housing units, we will have one million housing units, and this is a sufficient number for the capital."
He pointed out that "some ministries have distributed plots of land to their employees, as well as the Municipality of Baghdad distributed nearly 3 thousand housing plots," pointing out that "there are plots of land belonging to some ministries, but they have been overlooked, and this matter causes a problem in this sector."
The head of the Reconstruction Committee called for “in the event of distributing plots of land to citizens, infrastructure must be provided and loans must be prepared for their occupants so that a reconstruction movement can be achieved in them, and citizens are not forced to sell them,” stressing that “distributing lands without providing services to them, certainly pushes their owners to abandon them And sell it.”
