The Minister of Transport, Razak Muhibis Al-Saadawi, revealed that the development road will provide 100,000 job opportunities, stressing the existence of a Chinese desire to enter the project, and talked about the latest completion rates of the great port of Faw.
Al-Saadawi said, in a television interview followed by (Al-Mada), that "preliminary estimates indicate that the path of development that Iraq seeks to establish will provide 100,000 job opportunities." He continued, with "the establishment of investments on both sides of the road, these opportunities will increase significantly."
Al-Saadawi indicated that, “It is planned that after the completion of the first phase of the large port of Faw, 3 and a half million containers will be transported annually, but in the 2029 stage, the number is supposed to increase to 7.5 million containers and 33 million tons of goods annually.”
He explained, "The estimates at that time will be about 13 million passengers annually, and these are very large numbers, and they all pass through this road, and therefore we will be facing a large volume of investments on both sides."
Al-Saadawi stressed, "Iraq today has become the initiator and does not wait for the initiative of others," stressing that "China contacted us and asked to participate in the path of development."
And he noted, "The Chinese ambassador in Baghdad asked me to hold a meeting with him, and it was set for tomorrow, Wednesday, and the axis is the Chinese desire to participate in the path of development, and this is an important victory for Iraq." Al-Saadawi continues, "Iraq has a desire to enter China, which is a giant industrial country with which we have common interests, and this participation will be a very important factor in the success of the path of development." And he added, "The project is receiving interest and support from the government," noting that "Prime Minister Muhammad Shia'a al-Sudani personally supervises the project."
Al-Saadawi stressed that "the project is not limited to being understood as a road and a railway, but rather a group of projects that lead Iraq to development, starting with the great port of Faw project."
He explained, "The large port of Faw is located on an area of 54 km, and it is the second largest port in the region, after Jebel Ali, in terms of area." Al-Saadawi added, "The discussion of the development path project will show us its foundations and elements that guarantee its success, foremost of which is the great port of Faw."
And he stated, "The completion rates were very low in the port of Faw when the ministry took over," noting that "the project in its first phase includes five important projects, the first is the berths and the second is the road linking the port and Umm Qasr." Al-Saadawi said, "The third project is the submerged tunnel, the fourth is marine excavation and filling works, and the fifth is the navigational canal, and this stage is supposed to be completed in 2025."
And he goes on, “The completion rates after six months show that the first project has 52.92% completion rates, the second project 36.35%, the third project 22.51%, the fourth project 48.35%, and the fifth project 7.65%.” And Al-Saadawi went on to say that the percentage of completion in the fifth project is low because advanced excavators have not entered in the past, and the first one entered recently, and we hope that this percentage will rise soon.
On Saturday (May 27, 2023), the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, hosted the “Strategic Development Path” conference, with the participation of a number of Middle Eastern countries, namely Iran, Turkey, Syria, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Bahrain and Oman, and representatives of the European Union and the International Monetary Fund, while government officials confirm that Completion of this project will be in 2028.
