The acceptance rate of outstanding students raises the resentment and indignation of the students' parents

The decision of the Ministry of Education to set a rate of 95 percent for the acceptance of sixth primary students in the schools of the outstanding students this year caused the dissatisfaction and indignation of parents and their families, who demanded a review of this rate, at a time when the Ministry denied taking any decision to reduce and affirmed its adherence to it.
The Ministry of Education equalized the acceptance rates in the schools of the distinguished, Baghdad College, and the outstanding students at a rate of 95 percent for the first time for the academic year 2023-2024, as all curricula in the schools of the distinguished and Baghdad College in all its secondary levels are taught in English, while the curricula in the schools of the outstanding men and women are taught in Arabic.
The students’ families said in conversations with Al-Sabah: Most of the conditions in the country are exceptional, and the educational sector is part of it. Therefore, the Ministry of Education must take into account the conditions that students went through during the last academic year and reduce the admission rate in schools of outstanding students, as happened during the past year when admissions reached rates lower than that. They added that the rate set for admission to the schools of the outstanding, which is 95 percent, is equal to what was set for the admission of outstanding students this year. They were surprised by this procedure, stressing that they made strenuous efforts to teach their children and bring them to a rate of more than 90 percent, compared to school conditions, double shifts, lack of teachers, scarcity of books, and frequent holidays. And the parents indicated that there is a section of students whose averages exceed 94 and need fractions of a degree in order to be accepted, calling on the Ministry of Education to reconsider this average. On the other hand, the official spokesman for the Ministry of Education, Karim Al-Sayed, told Al-Sabah: After opening applications for the Schools of Distinguished and Outstanding Students and Baghdad College, applicants' applications were received through the dedicated website, and there is a great demand for applications for these schools due to the high rates of students. He stressed that it is not possible to reduce the acceptance rate, as only two days have passed since the application process. However, the acceptance rate was determined by specialized committees that studied the dimensions of this since the time and mechanism of submission.
And Al-Sayed added that there is no reduction in the acceptance rate, as there are no priorities or indicators that require that, pointing out at the same time that no average is accepted that is less than the specified, even if it is by simple fractions or less by half a degree, as the application mechanism is electronic and the application program to these schools is designed according to predetermined rate ratios and rejects the form of students electronically who have a rate lower than the required.
