The House of Representatives responded to the Kuwaiti protest regarding the Federal Court’s veto of the constitutionality of the agreement regulating navigation in the Khor Abdullah Canal, stressing the necessity of opening the file and amending the agreement in a way that guarantees Iraq’s interests.
Member of the House of Representatives, Jassem Al-Moussawi, told Al-Sabah: “Parliament will work during the coming period to demand and confirm Iraq’s rights in the issue of Khor Abdullah, which cannot be divided because the site is shared and Iraq must benefit from its resources, and an agreement cannot be drawn up that harms Iraq’s interests.” Al-Moussawi added, “Iraq is going through an important stage, and its government represents the people, and it is a government that does not confiscate the rights of its people. Therefore, we demand that our rights be confirmed through participation committees that review the agreements and then refer them to Parliament to vote on them,” noting that “re-reviewing the agreements represents... Restoring the rights of Iraqis.” Al-Moussawi stated that “the agreement may open the door to challenging other agreements to correct mistakes and address them at this stage,” pointing out “the necessity of responding to calls for concern for the country’s interests, while emphasizing not to plunge the region into conflicts due to previous mistakes.”
In addition, the head of the Supreme Judicial Council, Faiq Zidane, received the Kuwaiti ambassador to Baghdad, Tariq Al-Faraj, and stressed the importance of respecting and implementing the agreements and treaties concluded between Iraq and Kuwait. A statement of the Supreme Judicial Council stated that Zidane discussed with the Kuwaiti ambassador cooperation between the two brotherly countries in the judicial field, stressing. "Iraq's respect for the State of Kuwait in its history, present and future, and the independence of the State of Kuwait through the various historical stages, as well as emphasizing the depth of the relationship between the two brotherly peoples and Iraq's appreciation for the honorable positions of the State of Kuwait in helping Iraq get rid of the dictatorial regime." The statement quoted Zidane as calling for "the importance of respecting Implementing the agreements and treaties concluded between Iraq and Kuwait in accordance with the constitutional and legal contexts and respecting the implementation of relevant Security Council resolutions.”
