A missile bombardment targeted two military bases in Iraq containing American forces, without causing casualties

A security and military source said on Friday that two missile attacks targeted two bases in Iraq housing American forces, without recording any casualties.
These attacks come as Iraqi factions loyal to Iran threaten US interests in Iraq against the backdrop of Washington's support for Israel in the war with Hamas, which has so far resulted in thousands of deaths.
An Iraqi security source, who requested anonymity, said on Friday that “three Katyusha shells fell in the vicinity of an international coalition camp” that includes American forces near Baghdad airport, on Thursday night.
An Iraqi military source confirmed the attack, stressing that no casualties were recorded in the attack, while “the loss assessment is still ongoing.” No party has yet claimed responsibility for this attack.
Earlier on Thursday night, the Iraqi military base of Ain al-Asad, located in western Iraq and housing American forces, was also attacked with missiles, according to the military source.
He said that the attack “did not cause any damage.” The “Islamic Resistance in Iraq” claimed responsibility for that attack, via Telegram channels affiliated with Shiite factions loyal to Iran.
Before that, the US Central Command announced on Wednesday that it had thwarted three drone attacks in Iraq that caused “minor” injuries.
Iraqi factions loyal to Iran had accused Israel and the United States of committing a “massacre” in Gaza, including the Hezbollah Brigades - one of the most prominent factions of the Popular Mobilization Forces - which stressed in a statement the necessity of “these evil people leaving the country” in reference to the Americans, and threatened them if they did not. They do so, “for they will taste the fire of hell in this world before the afterlife.”
Until last year, bases housing American forces were subjected to numerous missile and drone attacks. Since the summer of 2022, these attacks have stopped while Iraq has witnessed relative stability. No party claimed responsibility for these attacks at the time, but the United States attributed them to Iraqi factions loyal to Iran.
Iraq announced that the presence of foreign “combat” forces in the country ended at the end of 2021 and that the new mission of the international coalition is advisory and training only. In this context, 2,500 American soldiers and 1,000 coalition soldiers are still deployed in three Iraqi military bases.
More than 1,400 people were killed in Israeli territory on the day of the Hamas attack, according to Israeli authorities. The Israeli military said about 1,500 Hamas fighters were killed in the counterattack that allowed Israel to regain control of the areas attacked.
Hamas has kidnapped approximately 203 people and is holding them hostage, according to revised figures published Thursday.
On the Palestinian side, 3,785 people were killed in the Gaza Strip, including at least 1,524 children, according to the Hamas Ministry of Health.
