The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) revealed that the number of girls and women who underwent female genital mutilation (FGM) has increased by 15% in the past eight years.

Figures released by UNICEF showed that more than 230 million girls and women alive today have undergone female genital mutilation (partial or total removal of the external female genital organs), compared to 200 million in 2016.

Katherine Russell, Executive Director of UNICEF, said that the prevailing trend is to circumcise girls at a younger age, noting that “female genital mutilation harms girls’ bodies, harms their future, and puts their lives at risk.”

UNICEF explained, "Work to eliminate this practice by the United Nations' target date of 2030 must be done 27 times faster than it is now."

According to the data, about 60% of the 144 million cases of female genital mutilation occur in Africa, followed by 80 million in Asia and 6 million in the Middle East. Somalia, Guinea, Djibouti, Sudan and Mali witness the highest rates of female genital mutilation.

UNICEF said that there are also countries dealing with other pressing issues, such as conflicts, climate shocks, and food insecurity, which makes it difficult to provide programs to support girls, noting that “more families are choosing to have their daughters circumcised at an early age, sometimes as young as two years old, to reduce "The physical abuse and psychological trauma experienced by older girls."
