Residents of Souq Al-Shuyoukh and Al-Fahd renew their demand for the dismissal of officials and holding companies accountable for poor implementation of projects

Dhi Qar / Hussein Al-Amel
Demands were renewed in the Souq Al-Shuyoukh and Al-Fahd districts in Dhi Qar Governorate to dismiss officials and hold companies implementing service projects accountable for poor implementation. While they confirmed that most of the residential neighborhoods in the two aforementioned districts were being flooded,
The Provincial Council announced the formation of an investigative committee to follow up on the work of the Al-Fahd sewer project and submit a report on the project work within five days. The districts of Souq Al-Shuyoukh and Al-Fahd witnessed protest demonstrations against poor services and the inundation of most of their areas as a result of the rain wave, while video clips and photographs on social networking sites showed scenes of streets completely submerged in water and mud, homes that were flooded, citizens who were cut off from reaching their homes, and vehicles with half their tires submerged in water. Sludge and mud.
Majid Al-Saffah describes the reality of the situation in the Suq Al-Shuyoukh district, saying in an interview with Al-Mada: “Souq Al-Shuyoukh (29 km south of Nasiriyah) needs an integrated sewage project so that the people’s suffering will not be repeated as a result of the flooding of their areas and homes when the rains fall.”
He pointed out that “the district lacks an integrated sewage system to drain rainwater,” pointing out that “the station that raises water in the district is a joint station for discharging heavy water and rainwater, and this is not sufficient for the purpose, and its conveyor lines are often clogged for various reasons.” Al-Saffah spoke about “all the areas in the center of Souq Al-Shuyoukh district being subjected to flooding, such as Al-Zahraa, Al-Najada, Al-Hawizeh 1st and 2nd, Al-Salba, Al-Ghadir, Al-Askari 1st and 2nd neighborhoods, and the outskirts of the Al-Hawizeh area and Al-Shumu’ area,” describing the condition of the aforementioned areas as marshes and swamps.
He confirmed the sinking of many homes, including his own, which sank twice within one week as a result of overflowing water and flooding of the streets.
Al-Saffah finds that “the solutions undertaken by the service departments, especially the sewage departments, in light of these conditions, are patchwork solutions, since the judiciary needs an integrated sewage system.” He stressed that the sewage project was given the highest priority in the Souq Al-Shuyoukh district and that other projects were postponed until it was completed, speaking about the effects of water overflow on the paving work that took place recently in some residential neighborhoods.
In the same context, the people renewed their nightly demonstrations in the Souq Al-Shuyoukh district to demand the improvement of services and the dismissal of officials in the aforementioned district. A statement read by one of the demonstrators in front of the crowd of demonstrators stated that the people of Souq Al-Shuyoukh are living in difficult conditions caused by the sluggish work on its projects, the failure of which the recent rains have proven and the failure of the head of the administrative unit. In the district, not only in the city center, but also in its environs.”
He added, “Hence, we came out today demanding the dismissal of the mayor of Souq Al-Shuyoukh, holding accountable the companies that work in the judiciary, expelling those who are lagging behind, and replacing them with others that are compatible with the ambitions of this city.”
The statement spoke of “the flooding of homes, streets, and schools, and the disruption of work hours with every rain shower,” and the demonstrators stressed in their statement, “We say it with all frankness that we are determined and will remain until our demands are met.”
For its part, and in light of the demonstrations that broke out in Al-Fuhud district (65 east of Nasiriyah), which witnessed clashes between security forces and demonstrators, the Dhi Qar Governorate Council formed an investigative committee to follow up on the sewage project in the district. A document seen by Al-Mada stated that “an investigative committee headed by a member of the council, Hadiya.” Jassim Al-Khikani and two members from the governorate office and the sewerage directorate to follow up on the work of the Al-Fahd sewer project. The official document set a time limit of 5 days to submit a report in this regard to the governorate council.
The recent rain wave in Dhi Qar revealed the poor implementation of service projects, especially sewage networks, as many residential homes were flooded as a result of rain and sewage overflow. It also revealed the need of poor residential neighborhoods for more services, rehabilitation of infrastructure in the sewage sector, and paving of roads in order to avoid the resulting damage. Heavy rain, flooded streets, and damaged homes.
Rain is a heavy burden on the popular neighborhoods and slum areas that constitute the poverty belt of the city center of Nasiriyah and the centers of the districts and districts, as there are no regular sewage networks and the roads are cut off in the unpaved streets, especially in the neighborhoods that suffer from delayed infrastructure projects, or those that are not served by sewage networks.
Hundreds of residents of Souq Al-Shuyoukh district (29 km south of Nasiriyah) renewed their nightly demonstrations in (mid-April 2022) to demand infrastructure projects and municipal, health, and educational services. They threatened at the time to dismiss all officials who were reluctant to perform their duties. It is noteworthy that the demonstrators in the Souq Al-Shuyoukh district demanded in (early April 2021) the local government and the Integrity Commission to open an investigation into the fate of 11 billion dinars that were allocated to improving the service reality in the judiciary, indicating that the service reality had not witnessed any improvement despite the officials’ claim to have spent that money.
