Souq Al-Shuyoukh gives the local administration a week to list its projects in the Reconstruction Fund

Dhi Qar / Hussein Al-Amil
Night demonstrations were renewed in Suq Al-Shuyoukh district to demand infrastructure projects and municipal, health and educational services, and while the demonstrators gave the local government one week to include the required projects within the Dhi Qar reconstruction fund, they threatened to dismiss all officials who were reluctant to perform their duties.
Thousands of residents of Suq Al-Shuyoukh district (29 km south of Nasiriyah) participated in a night demonstration that took place in the center of the district, and they raised banners and pictures showing the extent of the devastation caused by the deterioration of the reality of services.
Civil activist Adel Al-Saidi told Al-Mada that "Suq Al-Shuyoukh district is one of the stricken cities that have been marginalized within the reconstruction plan adopted by the local government in the Dhi Qar Reconstruction Fund."
Al-Saidi added, "The judiciary suffers from great neglect, lack of basic services, and a complete deterioration in infrastructure."
He pointed out, "Most of the district's streets suffer from major damage and sewage overflows as a result of the reluctance and suspension of work on the sewage project, which was not completed despite the passage of 14 years."
Al-Saidi pointed out that "the streets have turned into a swamp of sewage water and waste, and it has become impossible for the local population to pass through, in addition to the scarcity of water, its unsuitability for human consumption, and the great shortage of bedding."
He stressed, "The demonstrators gave the local government in the district, the governorate, the reconstruction fund, and the representatives of the Suq Al-Shuyoukh district, a period of one week to include the required projects within the governorate's reconstruction plan."
Al-Saidi pointed out that "the demonstrators stressed the dismissal of every incompetent official and director of a department who is unable to advance the reality of services in the judiciary."
According to a statement by the demonstrators, received by (Al-Mada), it included “inviting the governorate administration and parliamentarians to include the service and infrastructure projects needed by the judiciary within the reconstruction fund and to rescue the judiciary from the miserable situation in which it is living.”
The statement demanded, “the establishment of a hospital with a capacity of 200 beds for the district, which has a population of more than 350 thousand people, according to government estimates, with the provision of a special university building for colleges in the district.”
He also called for "following up on lagging projects and holding companies that have not fulfilled their contractual obligations and caused exacerbation of the suffering of citizens and deprived the judiciary of the services that these projects were to provide if they are completed within the time limit specified for them."
The statement went on to "continue the peaceful demonstration until their demands are fully achieved," and gave "the local government one week to implement the demands."
Souk Al-Shuyoukh district faces a number of problems, including lagging ministerial and development projects, scarcity, pollution and salinity of water, declining agricultural areas and marshlands. It also suffers from the problem of high rates of poverty, unemployment, drug abuse and clan conflicts that have resulted in a rise in crime rates.
For his part, activist Hassan Hadi Al-Iraqi told Al-Mada that “the Suq Al-Shuyoukh district is a stricken city, and all the officials who took charge of it did not perform their administrative duties in the required manner that advances the reality of services,” pointing to “the dominance of political will, parties and influential currents over the decision-making authority.” in the judiciary.”
Al-Iraqi stressed, "The presence of compliments between officials at the expense of the public interest, as keenness to stay in office has become more important than the citizen."
He pointed out that "all the municipal, health and educational sectors are suffering in the Shuyukh market, and that their suffering, which has been exacerbated day after day, has negatively affected people's lives."
Al-Iraqi stated, "The education sector suffers from a severe shortage of school buildings, overcrowded classrooms, and insufficient trips and books to meet the needs of schools."
Al-Iraqi concluded, “Most of the streets in popular neighborhoods are unpaved, suffer from potholes and are not covered by municipal services; This is due to the lack of mechanisms, despite the large budget of the municipality’s department.”
It is noteworthy that the demonstrators in the Suq Al-Shuyoukh district demanded in (early April 2021) the local government and the Integrity Commission to open an investigation into the fate of 11 billion dinars that was intended to advance the service reality in the judiciary, noting that the service reality did not witness any improvement despite the officials’ claim to spend that money.
