Washington lied to Erdogan: The raids on Sinjar have not been done with our knowledge and Iraq's sovereignty must be respected

    Release Date: 2017/4/26

The United States expressed deep concern about the raids launched by Turkish airliners early Tuesday on areas in northern Iraq and Syria, and killed and wounded, "noting that" the raid was carried out without coordination with the international coalition against a supporter. "
Acting US State Department spokesman Mark Toner told reporters the Turkish raids had been carried out without "proper coordination with the United States" or endorsement of the Washington-led international coalition against Da'ash.
He stressed that the United States expressed concern about this matter to the Turkish government directly, pointing out that these raids "have caused losses among the forces of our partners in the fight against [Da'ash], including members of the Kurdish Peshmerga forces."
US-backed Kurdish protection units say they were targeted in Turkish raids, but Ankara insists its raids targeted only the PKK, which it classifies as a "terrorist organization."
"I also want to point to the concerns expressed by the Iraqi government and reaffirm our vision that military action in Iraq must respect Iraqi sovereignty," he added.
"It is important for Turkey and all the partners in the efforts to defeat the urge to coordinate moves as close as possible to maintain the pressure necessary for a defeat in the battlefield and to ensure the safety of all coalition members in the theater."
Turkey announced yesterday that its fighter jets carried out raids on the northern regions of Jabal Sinjar and Mount Qarhuk in northern Syria to "destroy terrorist hideouts belonging to the PKK and led to the killing of 70 members of the party."
Five Peshmerga forces and one Ayazid fighter were also killed in the raid.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan claimed that the raids were carried out in coordination with the United States and Russia and the Kurdistan Regional Government, "stressing that Turkey will not allow the Sinjar become a base for fighters of the PKK."
The Iraqi cabinet condemned "the Turkish air assault on Iraqi territory in the Sinjar region, which caused the deaths of Iraqi victims, and said it was a serious violation of Iraqi sovereignty in contravention of the provisions of international law and the principles of good neighborliness."
The government also warned "Turkey to repeat this unjustified excess, which could lead to escalating steps affecting the efforts of Iraq and the international community in the war against terrorism."

America sent a military message to Turkey after striking Kurds in Syria and Iraq

The Turkish bombardment of sites of Kurdish militants in Iraq and Syria threatens to derail the relationship between Ankara and the United States, which was keen to send a "symbolic military message" to Turkey, accompanied by a condemnation from the Foreign Ministry.
On Tuesday, Turkish fighter jets launched raids on PKK positions in Sinjar and headquarters of the Kurdish People's Protection Units in northeastern Syria, killing dozens of Kurdish militants.
The Kurdish People's Protection Units are a major faction of the US-backed "Syrian Democratic Forces", which have been involved in battles against Washington and the United States in the battle to regain Al-Raqqa, the terrorist stronghold of Syria.
Ankara considers the Democratic Unionist Party and its military arm the Kurdish People's Protection Units, an extension of the PKK, which has been locked in an armed conflict in Turkey's Kurdish-majority territory for many years.
US support for Kurdish protection units deployed in northern Syria on the southern Turkish border has angered the Turkish authorities and caused a chill between Washington and Ankara.
After the raids on the headquarters of the General Command of the units near the city of Maalikiya in the province of Hasaka at the border triangle between Syria and Turkey and Iraq, US forces rushed to send a symbolic message to Turkey.
Pictures published by Western news agencies showed a US Army officer accompanying the leaders of the Kurds on a tour of areas bombed by Turkey, a message to Turkey that the military partnership between Washington and the People's Protection Units is close.
The diplomatic message came from the State Department, which expressed "deep concern" over the air strikes and said Ankara had not received approval from the Washington-led coalition against Da'ash, which includes some 60 countries, including Turkey.
"We have expressed these concerns directly to the Turkish government," US State Department spokesman Mark Toner said in a telephone conference with reporters. "The coalition did not agree to these strikes, which led to the tragic loss of life among our partner forces in an uphill fight."
At the same time, Toner was keen to soften the atmosphere with Ankara, adding that while the United States was aware of Turkey's concerns about the PKK, cross-border air strikes were damaging coalition efforts to combat the terrorist organization.
