President Donald Trump held a meeting with NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg at the start of a military alliance summit in Brussels on Wednesday, during which the US is expected to question the military spending of the allies.
President Trump stresses NATO members to boost their spending on defense, saying disproportionate defense spending is "an unfair burden on the United States."
"Because of me, NATO has raised more than $ 40 billion in defense spending," he said. The US president has called on NATO members to meet their commitments to spend 2 percent of their gross domestic product on defense.
On the other hand, Trump said during the meeting that Germany had become a "hostage" to Russia and "fully controlled" by the oil pipeline project, adding that Germany gets US protection while concluding energy deals with Russia.
