    US President Mike Pompio told Mexican President-elect Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador on Friday that President Donald Trump wants to strengthen and improve relations with Mexico after the pitfalls it faced.

    Mexican Vice President Marcelo Eberard said Lopez Obrador, in turn, handed Pompeo a letter to Trump that included his plans to reset relations and focus on trade, immigration, development and security.

    Eberard described the talks as "frank, friendly and respectable."

    Pompeo said his visit and other senior US officials were aimed at clarifying the "great importance" Trump attaches to increasingly tense bilateral relations.

    Trump angered Mexico by asking him to fund a border wall and his comments that it had done nothing to slow down illegal immigration. 

    Trump is also pushing for the amendment of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) for the United States.

    "We know there were stumbling blocks on the road between our countries, but President Trump is determined to make the relationship between the two peoples better and stronger," Pompeo said at the start of the 50-minute meeting with Lopez Obrador, who takes office on December 1.

    The delegation, headed by Pompeo, was Trump's adviser and son-in-law Jared Kouchner.

    US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said during his first visit to Mexico on Friday that he had "respectfully" stressed the need to deal with the border security between the two countries while acknowledging that the United States had increased demand for drugs.

    Pompeo described Mexico as an important partner in addressing regional challenges and added that it was necessary to establish strong and fair trade relations between the two countries.
