Baghdad - Mawazine News
On Friday, Christian Richer, Special Adviser and Head of the UNITAD investigation team, praised Iraq's cooperation in supporting the team's work to achieve justice and accountability for the crimes of ISIS, noting that UNITAD intends to intensify its investigations into the crimes committed in Mosul.
A statement issued by the United Nations said that Mawazine News received a copy of it, that "Special Adviser, Christian Richer, presented his briefing to the Security Council on the work of the United Nations investigation team to enhance accountability for crimes committed by ISIS (UNITAD) during the past six months. The briefing, which shed light on the progress outlined in the eighth report submitted by the investigation team (UNITAD) to the Security Council, emphasized the outstanding progress in cooperation between the investigation team (UNITAD) and the Government of Iraq in the pursuit of justice and accountability for the international crimes of ISIS.
He added, “Cooperation with the Government of Iraq and the Iraqi judiciary has always been fundamental to the implementation of the mandate of the UNITAD investigation team, which was emphasized by Special Adviser Richer, expressing his gratitude to the Government of Iraq, the Iraqi judiciary and the KRG authorities for supporting the implementation of the UNITAD mandate. "I have made establishing and maintaining an active dialogue with high-level members of the Government of Iraq, including the Presidency, the Prime Minister's Office, the Department of State and the National Security Advisor, a top priority," the Special Adviser said.
The Special Adviser stated that “early this year, strategic discussions between the investigation team (UNITAD) and the Iraqi National Coordination Committee, chaired by the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, led to the identification of joint priority areas, which included information sharing and capacity building for local counterparts.”
During the briefing, the Special Adviser presented examples of “the progress made during the reporting period in the team’s structural investigations aimed at covering ISIS crimes committed against all affected communities such as Yazidis, Shiites, Sunnis, Christians, Kaka’is, Shabaks and Shiite Turkmens.” One example of this is the progress made in the investigation team's investigations into the development and use of biological and chemical weapons, which have resulted in the discovery of new information through documentary and digital evidence and testimonies regarding the manufacture and use of these weapons. Special Counsel Richer emphasized, “Our investigations will look more closely at the underlying procurement system for these weapons and the related financial flow. This involves focusing on the involvement of specific individuals, including those involved in conducting human testing with chemicals on detained prisoners.”
Highlighting the priority future areas of the team's work, Special Adviser Richer said, "The investigation team (UNITAD) intends to intensify its investigations into the crimes committed in Mosul, the capital of the so-called 'caliphate' of the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL)," he also mentioned That the investigation team (UNITAD) intends to intensify its investigations regarding the destruction of the cultural heritage by ISIS, and he added, “The brutal destruction of the cultural heritage by ISIS was an attempt to erase the diverse cultural history of Iraq.” He expressed his pain after seeing the extent of devastation and destruction in some of the cultural heritage sites that he recently visited, and noted, "But at the same time, I was impressed by Iraq's ongoing efforts to revive these sites."
The Special Adviser said: “I can compare the work of restoring cultural heritage sites to our work on the investigation team (UNITAD) in our quest for justice and accountability; Both take years and both are painstaking operations, but it is work that has to be done.” He reiterated the commitment of the investigation team (UNITAD) to continue working towards holding ISIS members accountable for their international crimes in Iraq, stressing that this is "a commitment we owe to the survivors, to international justice and to all of humanity."
