The text of the report:
While the Basra Governorate in southern Iraq floats on a sea of oil, half of its population suffers from extreme poverty and a severe pollution crisis that affects agriculture and water. Thus, the huge black treasure turns into a curse that threatens the lives of millions of citizens in Iraq.
Karim Abdul Qais, Director of Basra Environment, told A24 news agency that the lack of commitment of the government and the public sector exacerbated the complications of the crisis, and called on the Iraqi government to expedite the solution of this problem, which caused a major health and economic crisis on the environment in Iraq, specifically the city of Basra.
For his part, Alaa Al-Badran, advisor to the Governor of Basra, told A24 that the standards used by the Iraqi government are wrong and very low, as he described it. He added that the government should find quick solutions to solve the crisis and allow the private sector to participate in resolving the crisis.
Between power outages, summer heat, winter cold, and water salinity, citizens complained about the repercussions of the pollution crisis on fishing due to excessive salinity in sea water, and also on agricultural crops that die and wither quickly due to polluted air and polluted soil, as they put it.
List of scenes
Interview - (Karim Abdul Qais - Director of the Environment of Basra)
“We have privacy in Basra in terms of rivers and companies specialized in oil. The environmental problems are diverse inside Basra. There is a tightening and restriction on companies operating in the south other than their work in Iraqi Kurdistan. We asked a lot from the Ministry of Environment to It adheres to its responsibilities, and there is no commitment to absolute environmental quality standards from the oil companies and the environment in the country, and the reason is due to weak law and implementation.”
Interview - (Alaa Al-Badaren - Adviser to the Governor)
“Unfortunately, the standards used in Iraq are very low, due to their lack of commitment to a concrete and documented plan for the correct exploration of oil, and it was suggested that gas and oil be injected into the ground as it exists in other countries, or that specialized companies be summoned and cooperate among themselves to solve this crisis. Today, the citizen cannot live because of this great crisis, and because of the discovery of oil in residential and agricultural areas, these crops were swept away and the population was displaced, causing a great crisis of the displaced and poisoning of agricultural crops, and we consider this blessing as the blessing of oil as a curse on us as Iraqis
Interview - (Iraqi citizen - farmer)
“We are now importing agricultural crops from abroad because of water and air pollution, and because of the government's intransigence with us and its lack of commitment to our demands has caused a suffocating crisis for us. We are now growing radishes and basil with nylon bags so that they are not affected by the air and its pollution.”
Interview - (Iraqi citizen - works in fishing)
“We cannot now catch any fish because of the salinity of the sea water, and because of Iran throwing oil waste, the sea became salty and all the fish disappeared from the seas around us.”
