Shafaq News/ The Iraqi Ministry of Water Resources announced, today, Saturday, the discussion of common "concerns" at the Baghdad Water Conference and the ideas proposed to solve the water crisis, while it revealed a high Iranian and Syrian ministerial presence to discuss the crisis and the "weakest" on the Turkish side.
The Undersecretary of the Ministry of Water Resources, Raed Al-Jashami, told Shafaq News agency, "The third edition of the Baghdad Water Conference will be held in the capital, with wide and increasing regional and international participation," noting that "the conference highlights the common concerns of all contributing countries in facing climate change, lack of rain and water scarcity for many reasons." Including population growth, as well as the global food crisis due to the Russian-Ukrainian war.
Al-Jashami added, "Through the Baghdad conference, we seek with the participating countries to discuss several files and topics, and there are workshops to be held on the sidelines of the conference, and through the conference, modern irrigation techniques and the use of wastewater will be identified instead of throwing it into pure water and polluting it, and all opinions and ideas that are presented will be heard." It will provide a party use of water."
And Al-Jashami indicated that "the level of attendance at the level of the participating countries (Iran, Turkey and Syria), was the largest representation headed by the Iranian Minister of Energy and a high-level technical delegation, the Syrian Minister of Irrigation and an advanced cadre in the ministry, while Turkey's presence was limited to an advanced cadre in the Ministry of Agriculture after the Turkish minister's apology for preoccupation with elections.
Today, Saturday, the Iraqi Prime Minister, Muhammad Shia’a al-Sudani, called for “urgent” international intervention to address the low water levels of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, while affirming his government’s intention to go to “desalinate” sea water, indicating in his speech during the Third International Baghdad Water Conference, that the file Water has become sensitive and important in all countries of the world," noting that "the water crisis began in the eighties of the last century, but citizens were not exposed because of the hostility in the former regime.
He added, "We inherited the water problems from the previous regime, and the administrative lack of awareness continued until we reached this stage."
Al-Sudani also met in Baghdad today, Saturday, with the Iranian Minister of Energy, Ali Akbar Mehrabian and his accompanying delegation. Scarcity of water resources, the effects of dry seasons, and water quotas on common river courses.
