The environment is the greatest challenge that man has faced since ancient times in his tireless struggle to find the best and most rewarding ways for his life, especially the desert environment with arid areas in which water is clearly scarce. However, man has cultivated the desert for thousands of years, albeit on a small scale, but there is much evidence of the practice of Agriculture there in the past and investing in it appropriately to add to the prosperity of civilization an element to enhance other environmental components and the areas that are more developed and easier to use. This issue will not be forgotten by those dealing with the agricultural reality in various countries, especially those whose land areas are covered with sand and hard rocks. Despite the difficulty of adapting to them, they sought to expand their investment and leave. The view of failure to place it within the circles of contemporary economic plans and activities.
There is no harm in referring to the measures taken by the Diwaniyah Governorate Agriculture Directorate to benefit from some desert areas by granting investment opportunities in the plant and animal wealth sectors and on an area of (26) thousand dunams in the Shinafiya district within a plan developed to invest in those areas and cultivate large areas based on the use of Highly efficient agricultural techniques in modern irrigation methods to regulate water use and provide stocks for food security, and not only that, but also seek to employ national workers in this field.
Iraq's experiences in exploiting the desert were not the only ones or rare in the world today. There are many successful experiences for which many developed countries of the world have laid strong foundations to be one of the important tributaries for enhancing their economic activities. When we talk about the most prominent of these experiences, we mention what happened in Australia, which considered agriculture an essential element. It has been in its economy for quite some time, although it is a largely arid country, but it has high productivity indicators, especially in livestock, poultry, lambs, wool production, and the cultivation of wheat, barley, and sugar cane, to the point where farms now occupy (47 percent) of the total area of its land, and constitute the added value of the agricultural sectors combined in 2017. (2019) an increasing percentage of the domestic product, as Australia exported abroad (60 percent) of agricultural products. Modern irrigation was considered a major and widespread practice in a country where many parts experience small amounts of rain, and agriculture spread throughout it has become its second strongest activity after industry. About increasing the number of its local workforce after they were trained to use modern methods for watering crops, desalinating water, and drip irrigation to expand work in areas with a semi-arid climate.
Therefore, it is not a fantasy to invest in the Iraqi desert, which is the most expansive aspect of the country’s surface, but some areas of it can be exploited for agriculture, in which appropriate quantities of water are available, or near the oasis areas spread therein, to strengthen the national economy, similar to many countries in the world whose environments are similar to the Iraqi environment.
