Central Bank Governor Ali Al-Alaq confirmed today, Tuesday (February 6, 2024), that the bank will soon launch a mechanism that ensures that only real travelers receive the dollar.
Al-Alaq said in an interview followed by “Baghdad Today” that “inflation has decreased significantly compared to the beginning of 2023,” stressing that “foreign financing operations are taking place smoothly and all importers and traders can obtain the dollar at the official price.”
He added, "The Central Bank confirms the possibility of meeting all requests for the dollar," pointing out that "The Central Bank has no problem in offering or selling the dollar."
He pointed out, "Some groups are trying to stay away from the platform for selling foreign currency in order to evade taxes, customs, or the presence of illegal trade."
He continued, "The bank is in a comfortable position to respond to requests to buy dollars and we have sufficient reserves," noting that "soon we will launch a mechanism that guarantees that only real travelers will obtain the dollar."
He stated, “The electronic payment file is a high priority and the Prime Minister is very supportive,” explaining: “We have made important strides with electronic payment at the level of collection and payment in state institutions.”
Al-Alaq pointed out that “the Central Bank is working on a strategy of financial inclusion and increasing users of financial services,” noting that “government agencies have been obligated to make payment and receipt through electronic payment cards.”
He continued: "The Central Bank is working to complete the establishment of Riyada Bank, which will focus on supporting small projects."
