    Economy News - Baghdad
The Platform Center for Sustainable Development announced that Iraq's gasoline consumption has reached 31 million liters per day, pointing out that Iraq annually imports more than 50% of its need for petroleum derivatives.
The center stated, in a research paper by researcher Haider Saeed Al-Khafaji, that “Iraq is suffering from problems in the energy sector, with total consumption reaching 27-31 million liters per day of gasoline, and more than 26 million liters of gas oil,” noting that “This consumption represents large proportions compared to countries such as Turkey, which consumes 11 million liters of gasoline per day, while its population is larger than Iraq.”
The researcher acknowledged, "Iraq's high fuel consumption rate is due to the weak culture of mass transportation and low fuel prices, which led to an increase in the use of cars, numbering more than 7 million cars, with an increase of 2%."
He continued, "The state subsidizes the prices of gasoline and gas oil by a rate ranging from 20% to 65% of its real cost, which encourages an unacceptable increase in consumption, according to the economic rule that increases support for any product is accompanied by an increase in consumption, in addition to the rise in fuel prices in the country." Kurdistan Region and Turkey, which makes smuggling a profitable business.”
He pointed out that "unregulated support costs the state 7 trillion dinars annually, and this money can be invested in building a refinery the size of the Karbala refinery to meet the local need for oil derivatives and export the surplus."
