The Minister of Industry, Khaled Battal, explained the reasons for Shell’s apology for continuing with the Nebras Petrochemical Industries Project, while indicating that the Ministry of Industry is considering reducing the size of the petrochemical plant and opening branches of the plant in several places.
Battal said, “The Dutch Shell Company’s apology for continuing to work on the Nebras Chemical Industries Project was due to their new policy regarding their investments, as they moved from investing in petrochemicals to investing in gas,” noting that “the project was launched in 2015, that is, 9 years ago.” .
He explained, “Shell is a 45% partner in the Basra Gas Company, 5% in Mitsubishi, and 50% in Southern Gas, and therefore they have expressed their willingness to complete work with us in this regard.”
He added, “The project has come a long way, and resuming work on it will not be from scratch, and there are existing consulting studies specialized in this regard.”
He stated, “The site of the Nebras Chemical Industries Project is now prepared, and we have reached very advanced stages in removing mines and war remnants from that site, and it has been completely completed, and the waterfront is ready and in place.”
He pointed out, “After talking with Prime Minister Muhammad Shiaa Al-Sudani and Oil Minister Hayan Abdul-Ghani, more than one option was presented, so we will announce them at the appropriate time, after deliberating with the Ministry of Oil.”
He continued: “The discussion was about gas, as the project requires 170 cubic meters of ethane gas for every million tons, and this was a challenge, because it depends on licensing rounds and associated gas,” noting that “after the entry of the French company Total, it will give the Ministry of Oil the possibility of providing this.” Quantity of gas.
He pointed out, “There is an idea to reduce the size of the petrochemical plant and open branches of the plant in several places, which will give us more flexibility and fewer technical requirements.”
