Just last summer temperatures there reached 54.0 °C (129.2 °F), tying Death Valley's highest reliably recorded temperature on Earth.
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is known for its desert climate and year-round sunshine, but freak weather conditions have covered part of it in snow. And as if that wasn’t weird enough, heavy winds also caused a crane to collapse, sparking a fire.
One person was injured in the blaze following the crane collapse on Dubai’s busy Sheikh Zayed Road, according to officials cited by AFP.
The freak weather was caused by the jet stream bringing arctic weather into the desert, SEE BELOW.

The incident prompted the Dubai Roads and Transport Authority to briefly suspend part of the city’s metro service as a “safety precaution” due to falling debris on the tracks.

Authorities also urged motorists to drive carefully on the road, after the National Center for Meteorology and Seismology (NCMS) warned of increasing winds and poor visibility.

Winds reached between 75 and 80kph (45 and 50mph) across the UAE, which was also hit by rough seas.

A rare 10cm (3.9 inches) of snow landed in the area of Jebel Jais, the UAE’s highest mountain, Gulf News reported. Temperatures also plummeted between -2°C (28.4°F) and -3°C (26.6°F) in the area according to RT.

At least seven people died, hundreds of livestock perished and more than 60 homes destroyed as a snowstorm entered a second day in northern Sar-i-Pul province on Saturday.
Eng. Aziz Rahman Imaq, the provincial natural disaster management authority head, told a press conference here that the continued snowfall for two days had caused human and financial losses in Sar-i-Pul.
He said 30 to 80 centimeters of snow was recorded in some areas and seven people including three women and a child lost their lives to the blizzard in Sayyad, Sozma Qala and Balkhab districts.
Imaq said more than 60 residential buildings had also also destroyed and hundreds of cattle lost.
He said edible and other essential items were delivered to around 2,000 affected people by relevant organs.
If needed, more commodities would be distributed to the affected families by air.
A day earlier, four minibuses stuck in snow in a pass in Balkhab district on Friday night were rescued by police and local people.
Mohammad Noor Rahmani, provincial council head, expressed concern over the situation and said most of roads to districts had been cut off from the provincial capital, Sar-i-Pul city.
A provincial council member, Mohammad Ali Hakimi, said Balkhab River had stopped due to heavy snow and reportedly 40 homers had been destroyed in the district.
The deaths come after Heavy snowfall and freezing weather led to the death of 27 children, all under the age of five, in a remote district in northern Afghanistan, officials said last Thursday, amid fears that the toll could rise. Roads in Darzaab in northern Jawzjan province were blocked by 50 centimetres (20 inches) of snow, cutting off access for villagers in the area to medical care as temperatures plunged to -10 degrees Celsius (14 Fahrenheit).
"Unfortunately we have 27 children killed due to heavy snowfall and freezing weather," district governor Rahmatullah Hashar told AFP, saying the deaths had occurred over the last two or three days.
All the children were under the age of five, he said, adding the blocked roads mean the toll could still increase.

Gale-force winds battered France's southwestern Atlantic coast on Saturday (Feb 4), leaving more than quarter of million homes without power, the national electricity grid Enedis said.
National weather agency Meteo France said winds reaching speeds of up to 160 kilometres per hour (100 miles per hour) had battered the coast and warned that in some places they could even reach higher than 160 kph.
Three western regions were put on red alert as the storm felled trees and brought down powerlines, cutting off roads although there were no immediate reports of casualties.
Enedis said that power had been cut to more than 250,000 homes in the departments of Gironde and Charentes with another 1,000 affected in the neighbouring region of Landes.
It said it had on Friday doubled its number of staff working in order to tackle the anticipated storm damage.
Overnight, firefighters were called out more than 140 times, mainly to clear trees and fallen power lines, local officials said.
Although the winds are expected to die down later in the day, another less powerful storm is expected to hit the western coastline on Sunday, forecasters said.
