Australia is about to resettle 12,000 refugees who fled the war in Syria and Iraq after promising to do so quickly a year ago.
Immigration and Border Protection Minister Peter Dutton said Wednesday that all 12,000 visas had been issued and more than 10,000 refugee camps in the Middle East had been brought to Australia.
"The remaining refugees will be resettled in the coming months," he added, adding that there are 1,750 refugees accepted by Australia each year.
Former Prime Minister Tony Abbott announced in September 2015 that the 12,000 refugees would be resettled as soon as possible, but less than a week later, Abbott left office and was succeeded by Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull.
Peter Schargold, general coordinator for refugee resettlement in New South Wales, said the thorough screening would hinder resettlement.
