Australia announces the end of its mission against "Da'ash" in Iraq and Syria
Australian Defense Minister Marys Payne said on Friday that her country would end its air strikes against the Da'ash organization in Iraq and Syria and return its Super Hornets after three years of involvement in the US-led coalition in the Middle East.
"The decision was made after Iraq declared victory over a supporter," she told a news conference in Sydney.
"After discussions with Iraq and with the members of the international coalition, the Australian government has decided that we will repatriate from the Middle East our six Super Hornets," she told reporters.
She noted that the mission was "long and arduous ... all of our members made an extraordinary contribution."
Australia has been involved in US-led efforts against the Middle East in the Middle East since 2014.
Payne said Australia's operations in the region would continue and that 80 people were involved in the Iraq operations group, including Australian special forces, who would continue their mission.
